Obvious Reasons to Take Down a Tree

Here in Georgia we are blessed to have so many trees. In fact, trees grow like weeds here so we really don't have to feel bad if we decide to take a few down for the following reasons:

Bad placement - Those small pine trees you didn't notice when you bought your house fifteen years ago are huge now and every spring deposit sap and bright yellow pollen on your parked car. It is just annoying to have pine straw and branches that block light and views from our windows. No matter what kind of beautiful tree you might have, if it is too close to your house, utility lines or pool it might need to come down.

Dying and diseased - While most trees are hardy for decades or even centuries, they can be affected by drought, disease, insects, fungus and old age. The mature size of a tree generally determines how long the lifespan of a tree is. Smaller ornamental trees will typically only live for 15 to 20 years, while maples can live 75 to 100. Oaks and pine trees can live up to 2 or 3 centuries. A tree that is dying from old age cannot be helped.

Roots - Large roots pose a serious threat to foundations, driveways, sidewalks and underground utilities. If you have this problem do not take it upon yourself to do some root pruning. Imagine what would happen if you decided to remove a leg from your kitchen table. Roots not only provide nutrients to the tree, they are paramount to the tree's stability. It is financially smart just to take the tree down and protect your concrete investment.

Liability issues - If you have a large leaning tree aimed at your neighbors home or fence you are asking for trouble. In the state of Georgia, the owner of a tree is liable for injuries from a falling tree only if he knew or reasonable should have known the tree was diseased, decaying or otherwise constituted a dangerous condition. A landowner who knows that a tree on his property is decayed and may fall and damage the property of an adjoining landowner is under a duty to eliminate the danger. It is better to be safe than sorry.
